What is the difference between laboratory-grown diamonds and natural diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds that were grown by scientists in a lab. They share the same chemical makeup as natural diamonds, and are optically identical. The biggest differences between natural and lab-created diamonds are how they’re made, and how rare they are. We have lots of information for you to discover about our lab-grown diamonds and how they’re made.

Lab Created Diamonds

What are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are cultured diamonds that are chemically, physically, and optically equal to diamonds originating from nature. Both have the similar chemical composition and atomic structure, producing the very same strength, fire, and sparkle. Man Made Diamonds are a testament to the use of technology and human accomplishment.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

The biggest concern among people is whether these diamonds are real. Lab-grown diamonds are real, having the same chemical, visual, and physical traits as their natural counterparts.

Carbon, intense heat, and high pressure are required to grow both, with one difference. The natural ones form in the Earth’s mantle, and the lab diamonds are made with cutting-edge equipment in a controlled laboratory environment.

Lab diamonds are as durable as natural ones and have the famous Mohs hardness of 10. The main difference is that they are much cheaper, up to 40% less than the price of naturally mined diamonds.

Is There a Difference Between a Naturally Mined and a Lab-Grown Diamond?

There is no way to tell the difference at first glance, except for some minor details. The girdle of a lab-grown diamond has a laser inscription visible only with a magnifying glass. The girdle is the widest part forming the outline when the diamond is seen from the top.

A lab report number may be inscribed on the girdle, giving you a lot of information about the diamond. If the girdle contains nothing, you can find out if it’s mined or created only by contacting a major gemological lab.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Certified?

Every purchased lab-grown diamond must have a certification, just like a natural diamond. The report should include information about the 4 C’s (carat weight, color, cut, and clarity), fluorescence, and proportions. Be sure that the certificate comes from a reputable lab. Diamonds coming right out of the laboratory are graded and certified by third-party organizations, such as IGI, GIA, EGL and AGS. They are non-profit gemological laboratories with a worldwide reputation, meaning that lab created diamonds verified by any of them are safe to buy.

Do lab-grown diamonds test positive on a diamond tester?

Yes, CVD diamonds will pass all examinations used to verify a pure carbon diamond.

How will a Lab-Created Diamond Compare in Worth to a Mined Diamond?

Lab-Created diamonds are priced, on average, up to 40% less than an constant earth-mined diamond. Pricing, like earth-mined diamonds, can depend upon the lab cvd diamond’s clarity, cut, carat weight, and color.

How Are Lab Created Diamonds Grown?

There are two types of lab Grown diamonds: lab grown diamonds make by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) without any further treatment, which is the most common way. And lab created diamonds produced with the high pressure high temperature (HPHT) treatment.

CVD produces high-quality diamonds. They are quite rare in nature and have almost no impurities. In this procedure the diamond stone is placed into a reactor with a grouping of gases. The gases are heated until they become plasma and the atoms are separated from each other. The free carbon atoms are put downed onto the diamond seed. New levels of diamond will grown onto the diamond seed.

The HPHT procedure imitates the way diamonds are formed under the earth’s crust. A diamond seed is placed in a controlled room with carbon in the form of graphite and a metal catalyst. Under huge pressure and high temperature the metal catalyst dissolves the graphite and the carbon atoms bond with the diamond seed. This way it produces into a bigger diamond. The small diamond seed can be a lab grown (man-made) or a geological diamond. HPHT is sometimes used to improve the colour of lab grown diamonds with grades from G to Z.

Do Lab Grown Diamonds Change Color Over Time?

No, that’s not true. Lab created diamonds never fade their quality or color over time with exposure to light or Air. They will always hold their natural spark and shine, just like the naturally mined diamond.

How Sustainable Are Lab Created Diamonds?

While some buyers are attracted to the beauty of the diamond and purchase it immediately, some are more concerned about the environmental friendliness and transparency towards Nature. However, Lab created diamonds are more than a sustainable choice in terms of environmental impact because they are nurtured in human-controlled laboratories rather than deep mining of the Earth’s surface, causing disturbance to Nature.
